Through the “Tourism in the Gulf” Project’ “The Gulf of Guayaquil will become a touristic area that will vindicate the fluvial tradition of the Guayas River,” said the Minister of Tourism, Sandra Naranjo, during a press conference at the main Port. The first phase of the “Tourism in the Golf” Project went into operation on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
The Secretary of State said that this new river alternative articulates the main touristic sites of the Guayaquil surroundings: Santay Island, Duran Train Station, Malecon 2000, and The Historical Park in Sanborondon. She added that in this area one can enjoy nature (observation of fauna and flora), active tourism (walking, cycling) and cultural and experiential activities.
This first phase of the project includes emblematic projects of the National Government such as the Ecovillage (Ecoaldea) on the Santay Island, the pedestrian bridge linking the island with the city of Guayaquil, the Historical Park and the Duran Train Station.
The main objective of this work is to restore navigation on the Guayas River from the tourist point of view and to present Guayaquil as an additional destination for domestic and foreign tourists. The Gulf of Guayaquil is the main geographic feature of the South Pacific coast and one of the most important water systems in the South Pacific South American continent.
The tourism project in the Gulf implements policies, instruments and activities aimed at the protection and recovery of natural resources as well as the recovery of the historical memory of the river port of Guayaquil, as a contribution to improving the environment and sustainable management.
Hours of operation will be Saturdays and Sundays, according to the schedules established for each visit site. Special outings are available upon reservation and confirmation.
This project is the result of an articulated process of the Ministries of Tourism (Mintur), Environment (MAE), Urban Parks and Public Spaces Public Company (EPPUEP), Ferrocarriles del Ecuador Public Enterprise (FEEP) and the Community of San Jacinto de Santay.
